I think it's perfectly reasonable. Package maintainers are stomping their feet and huffing about making a change that is in everyone's best interest. Why shouldn't the distribution set strong guidelines and enforce them? Too much is often sacrificed at the altar of backward compatibility. Move forward and leave the laggards behind.
