I don't think that's realistic, but I do think the threshold is negotiable (between society, the organizers, and people competing). Ideally, many people echo what you're saying regarding the Olympics, but it seems like for every Olympics it comes up. Looking back, ignoring it doesn't always seem like the right decision, either.
