- stdbrouw 7y agoFor those interested in the origins of the standard error in statistics, "The Most Dangerous Equation" by Howard Wainer is a good, short read: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/255612702_The_Most_Dangerous_Equation https://www.researchgate.net/publication/255612702_The_Most_...

- divan 7y agoThanks for posting this, wonderful read. I didn’t really get the example with chromosomes (I would expect some references proving that X chromosome really does contain genes linked to the intelligence), but it was an enjoyable piece of writing.
- divan 7y agoInterestingly enough, I can’t find mention of de Moivre equation anywhere except of this article. Does anyone know its more commonly used name?
- stdbrouw 7y agoIts more commonly used name is the (formula for the) standard deviation of the sample mean.
- divan 7y agoRight, thank you!

As far as I can remember, Wainer doesn't really assert that the equation is known as "de Moivre's equation", that's just what he calls it in the context of his article.
