Ask HN: What's your ideal laptop display?
Came across some older IBM Thinkpads during house cleaning today and took a trip down memory lane. Sleek machines and a 4:3 display that was pretty well suited for development tasks. Made me start to think about what kind of display I would really like to see on laptop lineups, after having read articles on 16:9 vs 3:2 vs 4:3.
For me, I'm partial to a screen with 2560px width, and for a laptop 14" seems to be my sweet spot for a HiDPI screen. 15" can be a bit big and 13" is just too small. Did some calculations earlier and came up with this diagram to visualize the differences between the different ratios.

For a 14" diagonal, these would be the screen dimensions:
4:3 11.2" x 8.4"
3:2 11.65" x 7.77"
16:9 12.2" x 6.9"
Personally would go for 4:3, despite most media being developed against 16:9 resolutions. I work in the computer graphics industry, letterboxing doesn't bother me. A double check of my math wouldn't hurt ;)
Extras: 100% sRGB minimum, IPS, at least 350 nits and matte. Would be cool to see HDR as well if needed.
