I remember having to add a cronjob to touch a file every 5 minutes and having Nagios monitor that because occasionally it would just stop processing new jobs and have to be restarted That may have been a Centos5/6 specific thing and it was probably caused by too frequent -HUP ing it, but it didn't feel like the decades made it that stable..
