Why would we expect that any technology we have the ability to develop would be developed? Just because there are literally no counter examples? Why do we expect the sun to come up every morning? The choice is to let society absorb and adjust to technological innovations, or pretend you can stop them from happening and tilt at windmills while society adapts and absorbs those changes. The other option is to leave society and refuse to accept new technologies (while society adapts and absorbs them) like the Amish or Ted Kaczynski.
