When I'm researching something I write about the thought processes and the meta-cognitive process involved, including comments on other resources (technical or not), so when time comes I have a technical article and a not technical article ready. I'm speaking as a student who doesn't writes papers for scientific publications, but I think the same methodology would benefit scientist in general. One of the most promising things I was taught at high school in Argentina were methods to think about how and why I think what I think. It's true that you don't have to apply it to any topic, but if you're serious about writing is really helpful to grow with that in mind.
