It hits close to home when I'm reading that article and realise that I've lived walking distance from the author. My lungs have certainly become a lot more sensitive these days. Pollution is something that becomes part of your day to day life, you just don't notice it. I tried cycling with a FFP3 dust mask recently and it was shocking to me how much better it felt.
