I've had a Twitter account for years (to contact customer support). They keep asking me for a phone number but I never provide it. I never got banned.

  This is a recent-ish change that only applies to new accounts.

    I still don't get it, I just signed up for a new Twitter account and didn't have to provide a phone number. Was there an official policy change from Twitter? Do you have a link?

      As far as I'm aware there was never any sort of official policy announcement. They just started banning any new account without a phone number a few minutes after creating it at some point. I personally experienced it a couple of times and there was a big thread about it on here a few months ago[1]. Maybe they changed it back again?
