I used to pick up copies of the Times every day when I attended college. And all due credit to the Times, they've managed to break a lot of highly important stories throughout their history, but it does seem to me that the quality of the paper has somewhat suffered over the past few years. The author does attribute this somewhat to the "Trump Bump", the term coined for media outlets fixation on the President because the stories simply garner increased attention. Of course, some stories are good and others are sloppy but they recieve attention either way, look no further than the constant (though negative) attention that Trump gives them.
I prefer less conjecture in my news. Ideally, I just want the known facts to be delivered to me without political bias and I want to be encouraged to make up my own mind. If I wanted, like you said, to hear the biased arguments from the left or from the right on a given issue, Id just tune into MSNBC or Fox News. For my money today, the Economist delivers what Im looking for to a much greater degree than the Times does.
