South Park Scrubbed from Chinese Internet
- aaron695 7y agoWhat's interesting is, although CC would have been horrified when they saw the episode, there was no social way to stop it going to air. The Muhammad episode for instance had a existing way of dealing with it, with directions from society already established. CC would have no moral issue censoring it, the cost benefit would have come out to censoring it, pissing off fans and the creators would have cost less than pissing off the China. But how would you even talk about censoring it in a meeting? (This is different to making a show that targets the Chinese market) But the NBA has opened a few doors though and censorship will normalise quickly. This has parallels in politics, for centuries politics had social structure, things that 'worked' just weren't done because we are social creatures and follow the rules. But the internet has allowed hyper-iterations on trying new things and social structures have changed, so these walls are crumbling and the pseudo-maximizers like chasing re-elections are winning. Interesting times, CC playing this episode will seem quaint and the good old days in a few years.
- joelx 7y agoI wonder what Chinese citizens think when a popular show like South Park just completely disappears? I usually appreciate South Park and it's very strong morals. I think we all need to boycott the NBA and Blizzard for putting money over freedom.
