As a well paid developer I'm very thankful to be in tech (I kinda just fell into it). IMO, being a developer doesn't require the intensive training of a doctor or lawyer yet pays really well (especially when you have 10-20 years experience). Personally I learned all I know on the job or on my own at home (my undergrad degree was Math and I did very little coding). Plus there are so many job options. Almost every company of a certain size needs software developers (or some type of IT staff). I've worked at companies where I had to work really hard with long hours, but I've also worked places with a very light workload (lots of screwing around time on HNs and Reddit). My son is adept at math and computers. I hope he goes the Computer Science route. He should be able to find a good job and live where he wants.
