I use standups to check in with everyone and... 1) inform everyone of why I'm making certain product decisions, so that everyone gets a "feel" for the problem space even though they're not directly talking to customers, etc. 2) Talk about a particular problem that wouldn't get discussed as a group if there wasn't time on the calendar every day, such as "where do we need to improve our telemetry" and 3) to just talk to each other for 30 minutes a day.
I don't like treating engineers as bug-closing robots and I don't think they like being treated as such. Standup gives everyone the feeling of being on a team of people working towards a common objective.
