Thanks for the pointer, haven't heard about it. Spatial-temporal indexing sounds interesting! Do you happen to have any estimates when things start to break down for you in PostGIS? My largest table of PostGIS 3D geometries (line strings) has ~800,000,000 entries and most bounding box queries are still very fast (<100ms).
