That sounds a bit like they are solving rich people's problems
- hnarn 7y agoSolving EV problems is a hard equal to solving rich people problems as long as EV:s aren't affordable, but hopefully they will be in a near future, and hopefully our consumer patterns in general will also change by that point to ease the transition into an economy less dependent on fossil fuel.

- avocado4 7y agoClimate change is primarily hitting the poorest of the world.
- rumanator 7y agoThe Netherlands is famous for being below sea level. I'm sure they have a dog in the race regarding rising sea levels.
- jacquesm 7y agoNL is like a machine in the sense that keeping the water out requires constant work and energy. Water is pumped out at a stupendous rate, if not for that the country would revert to being mostly a large lake in a decade or two.
- rumanator 7y agoReducing their oil dependency is something that doesn't benefit only "the rich", or any other political strawan. In addition, perhaps it's time to shed that miopic view on life that leads you to wrongly interpret anything that you believe benefits someone else as an attack on your personal interests.
- simongray 7y agoIt sounds like preparing for the near future where personal vehicles running on fossil fuels are being phased out. This is happening in many European cities (like Amsterdam) and is also being attempted by some European countries at the moment.
- _ph_ 7y agoOf all countries, the Netherlands would have an especially large incentive to combat climate change, as large parts are already below the sea level. Also pollution and noise due to car usage, are everyones problems. The government isn't giving electric cars away, but providing infrastructure seems like a good idea to me, as this is more difficult to provide as an individual. Also, electric cars are not limited to "the rich". They are well available in the price range most new cars are bought and even an used vehicle market is developing.
- buboard 7y agoIt is absolutely great to reduce car usage. Amsterdam is already making it very hard to own a car. But encouraging EVs actually increases car usage, EV or not. There s the question of industry standards, whether the technologies of today are final, and whether the electricity network can accomodate the massive needs for electric power. This might be premature optimization. And yeah, non-toy EVs are still a luxury item. > Of all countries, the Netherlands would have an especially large incentive to combat climate change OTOH they are the best in the world in dealing with sea levels. They 're already up to 6-7m below sea level. The worst predictions for rising sea levels are within average 2m. The Dutch are so good at it that countries employ them to build their artificial islands.
- contravariant 7y agoThere's just the one place 6-7m below sea level really. If I recall correctly the current infrastructure is capable of protecting against sea levels 6 meters above average, but that includes tides and storms. A 2m rise in sea levels could mean that all parts of the defence need to be raised a further 2m, and some of the natural defences (dunes etc.) might no longer be adequate.
- em500 7y agoPeople probably said the same when building the car infrastructure in the early 20th century.
- TheSpiceIsLife 7y ago> Currently working on a network for remote workers Sounds a bit like you're solving rich people's problems.
- timwaagh 7y agowell they are solving poor people's problems as well. if everyone is driving an ev i don't need to bike through the smog on misty rainy days. besides, this car is affordable for a large number of people as the numbers show.
- bryanlarsen 7y agoThe new car of today is tomorrow's used car.
- King-Aaron 7y agoI for one am looking forward to the $1000, 20-year-old Telsa of the future which I can thrash on the farm
- danans 7y agoI offer these 3 words: Used Chevy Volt There are a lot of them on the market now sub 20K and they are effectively EVs in most use cases.
- de_watcher 7y agoRich people's problems? More like the problems of the ones who are currently pedaling through the clouds of toxic exhaust.
