Maybe I'm wrong... I'm a vim old timer, and have been using it for years, but I really love the plugin community in Vim, and it has gotten better and better in the last several years.
Things like 'vim-tmux-navigator' saves me several keystrokes and makes vim splits work along side tmux panes. Tim Pope's 'vim-fugitive' really helps understanding the context of the changes in a git repo, or even navigate the history of changes in a particular file. Tim Pope's vim-sleuth automatically matches the formatting of a file you open.
Some modern plugins that attach languageserver features, like Coc.vim, or Ale, are really great for code completion, intellisense, automatic formatting, and linting.
Obviously vanilla vim is powerful enough to do most anything, but, it's really fun to tailor a vim environment.
