What happened?
- qzw 7y agoStock price is down 26% in the past year. Either the CEO wants to show that serious steps are being taken to right the ship or the CTO is leaving for greener pastures. Since the article quoted the CTO as saying that he’s starting his venture career, I’m guessing it’s the former.
- mjhagen 7y agoThey screwed up a perfect piece of software.
- jarfil 7y agoMore like competition, including open source solutions, has reached a point where Dropbox is becoming obsolete.
- abakker 7y agocan you personally recommend any open source solutions that are reasonably plug and play?
- petschge 7y agosyncthing[1] works nicely for me. [1] https://syncthing.net/ https://syncthing.net/
- dole 7y agoFor Windows users, SyncThing is normally a local browser app; SyncTrayZor wraps Syncthing into a more familiar SysTray app. (Made finally ditching Dropbox a lot less daunting so I sing its praises on here when I can.) https://github.com/canton7/SyncTrayzor https://github.com/canton7/SyncTrayzor
- mjhagen 7y agoI went to Syncthing as well and it works, but it's still no match for the DropBox of a few years ago.
- lotsofpulp 7y agoI don’t understand why one would expect to be able to compete with iCloud, google drive, one drive. They have so much cash to burn.
- scarface74 7y agoHave you ever known Apple to “burn cash”? They have this crazy idea that products should be sold at a profit.
- lotsofpulp 7y agoAs in, whatever you can do, they can do better, since they are able to spend so much more.
- scarface74 7y agoIt’s not they can do it “better”. They can do it “good enough” so that most people aren’t willing to use a smaller vendor and where the value add is not enough to have a sustainable business - see Dropbox, Spotify, Etc.
- SirPulse 7y agoThe CTO probably had a lions share in that. Not surprised how it went. :(
