Admittedly, it's not near the top of MIT scores, but it's well within the accepted range. MIT looks at all sorts for things when it admits students. You don't know what other qualifications this student had. He could have had straight A's, max scores on all his Advanced Placement exams, stellar recommendations from teachers, award-winning science fair presentations, etc.
