Ask HN: Tips on organizing/managing volunteer committees?

Hi HN, I'm volunteering for a sporting association and am wondering if anyone has any good tips on organizing/managing a group of volunteers? Currently we have a private Facebook group which is easy, but unstructured. Most of our volunteers would like to contribute to events, but don't want to come to meetings every month. Some kind of task management software would be great to distribute tasks with deadlines to volunteers, I was thinking of Jira but it's probably way too complicated for this sort of thing... Can anyone recommend any software or resources?
