If you have a listening device in your home, expect half your guests to suddenly stop coming over. I talk with the host once, and only once, and move on with my life. Do not permit the normalization of private surveilance.
- cheeze 7y agoThis is an incredibly "hner who is out of touch with reality" comment. I don't like Alexa devices in my home, but I'm gonna need to see any data backing your claim.
- postsantum 7y agoI wouldn't stop coming, but'd keep conversations at the superficial level
- algaeontoast 7y agoI just lose respect for people who actually find utility in devices like this... It's a stupid gimmick at best. To other commenter's asking for "proof" Alexa devices act as listening devices, see below sources where Alexa devices have had data subpoenaed by courts: [0] https://techcrunch.com/2018/11/14/amazon-echo-recordings-judge-murder-case/ https://techcrunch.com/2018/11/14/amazon-echo-recordings-jud... - snailmailman 7y agoThey do not record back to amazon 24/7 though. I have myself watched amazon echo traffic in wireshark. It sends nothing much of the time and then sends data when you issue commands that start with “Alexa”. That’s it. They listen for the wake word 24/7 but detect that locally, and then only send short sentences to the cloud for more advanced query processing.
- pcdoodle 7y agoThis is the network behavior until it isn't. Like the top most comment, Normalization of this technology is building a prison system, someday we might regret it.
