I only very recently came to the realization that my emotional numbness was caused by the emotional distance & neglect I experienced as a child. I'm still working through it, but I do think part of it was in part due to my immigrant parents believing that emotions were reserved for girls and not boys. Believe me, it's not a fun place to be, and I hope new parents do realize how important it is to teach young children how to make sense of their emotions.
