I'm in the hunt because I try to build a relational language (http://tablam.org http://tablam.org - looking for help!) and have collected as many resources as I could. Apart of the link given by @azhenley, some interesting stuff: About queries: - "Building Efficient Query Engines in a High-Level Language" by Yannis Klonatos, Christoph Koch, Tiark Rompf1, and Hassan Chafi - "Optimizing relational algebra operations using generic partitioning discriminators and lazy products" by Fritz Henglein The relational model - "An Introduction to Relational Database Theory" by Hugh Darwen About the whole thing: - "Database Systems: The Complete Book" by Hector Garcia-Molina Jeffrey D. Ullman Jennifer Widom - "Database Management Systems 3rd Edition" by Ramakrishnan About more modern stuff: - Readings in Database Systems - The Design and Implementation of Modern Column-Oriented Database Systems
