Given the size of the informal economy in the country, both GST and Demonetization were necessarily draconian for the scale of the problem they were trying to address. Admittedly both failed at improving the economy, but it has caused progress in strides towards the gargantuan problem that is the grey market. Everyone uses banks now, and online transactions have become the norm. My observations are restricted to urban areas though, so YMMV.
