There is general lack of basic scientific knowledge for those working in the media and too much cut & paste. However, Doctors should have known better - opioids are not some new fangled treatment for goodness sake[1] Doctors are highly trained, highly paid and their failure is central to the opioid crisis. [1] In fact they are one of the first modern medicines - a wonder drug - then people realized the downsides.
