- henryaj 7y agoGood question. To remove GPS metadata perhaps?
- DonHopkins 7y agoI always thought it would be safer to forge the GPS data so it points to a police station, instead of just removing it. Then your stalkers and thieves might be arrested for loitering and breaking and entering there, instead of at your own home.
- zaroth 7y agoWhich police station? What coordinates precisely? Could there be signs of which software you used to alter the data? All these things could leak bits of identifying information, which I think is strictly worse than the 1 bit of information leaked by removing EXIF entirely.
- DonHopkins 7y agoOne that will cost your enemies a lot of money to travel to, in a dangerous neighborhood, with a long record of police brutality and violence.
- penagwin 7y ago> Then your stalkers and thieves might be arrested for loitering and breaking and entering there, instead of at your own home. So I have 0 experience as a stalker - but won't they put that data into Google maps, see it's a police station, and probably assume that isn't your home? You'd have to be really brave and stupid to loiter and break and enter a station thinking it was somebody's home.
- mrfusion 7y agoBy the way, what happens to exif when you upload online (or also fb or instagram)? Does it get removed or can everyone see my location?
- nicoburns 7y agoFacebook will usually resize the photo, which ditches most of the EXIF information I think. You can be damn sure that facebook are tracking your location though.
- sp332 7y agoIt doesn't automatically get removed. Some services will remove some information. Facebook, predictably, uses the info itself but strips it from downloads. https://www.consumerreports.org/privacy/what-can-you-tell-from-photo-exif-data/ https://www.consumerreports.org/privacy/what-can-you-tell-fr...

- petepete 7y agoI have an EXIF viewer browser plugin and it's interesting to see how many images online retain their metadata. You see it in lots of places, from newspapers to forums and portfolios.
- glenneroo 7y agoProbably because most of the photos were post-processed (with exception for some where he explicitly wrote "Un-edited").
