Is that a bag of montmorillonite?[1] Is this to see how much coffee hipsters will pay for dirt? [1] - https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/09168451.2017

- troydavis 7y agoI don't have any firsthand knowledge, but it was created by a group of chemical engineering graduates who have been prototyping it for 2-3 years: Interviews: https://www.coffeeloversradio.com/clr-e117-decaf-coffee-has-never-tasted-this-good/ https://www.coffeeloversradio.com/clr-e117-decaf-coffee-has-..., https://seattlecoffeescene.com/decaf-coffee-get-really-interesting-tasty-seattles-decafino/ https://seattlecoffeescene.com/decaf-coffee-get-really-inter... - ebg13 7y agoFrom the kickstarter page under "How Does it Work?": > "The Decaf Pouch is full of beads that are made of a natural mineral that attracts and binds caffeine. Through a physical process called adsorption, the caffeine molecules stick to the beads." Yeah. Read my linked paper. The kickstarter photo certainly looks a lot like the primary component in most cat litter. Bentonite/montmorillonite is amazing stuff, but it's not amazing enough to buy in tiny pouches at a premium instead of by the kilo.

- TheRealSteel 7y agoWhy the attacking tone? I don't see the problem. I'm in no position to go digging up this dirt and sewing it into little bags myself, so if decaffeinating coffee is useful to me, why shouldn't I buy this? You could reduce anything to "just metal", "just a plant" etc. I'd be very interested in this if it really works and is affordable.
- andy6 7y agoHello there, montmorillonite is good for removing different things, but if you simply put that into a cup of coffee, you will be drinking muddy coffee. The Decafino team has spent more than 3 years developing the Decaf Pouch using plant extracts and earth minerals and did hundreds of coffee tastings to make sure that the coffees taste great. There was a lot of knowledge, time, and effort put into the development of this decaf technology with health and sustainability in mind. Their goal is to make the product more affordable and available to everyone in the long-run, and hope you can support them.
