I won't visit China for the same reason I won't visit Russia or the deep US South. I'm visibly LGBT, and I would fear for my safety.

- crimsonalucard 7y agoEducate yourself. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_China https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT_rights_in_China Like the united states China is by no means perfect, but fearing for your life? lol. Your movement talks about ignorance, but please note that ignorance exists everywhere including in those who talk about it.
- qtplatypus 7y agoFrom the linked page: All mentions to homosexuality in criminal law were removed in 1997. In 2001, the Chinese Society of Psychiatry declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder. However, such change is yet to be reflected by the regulations of National Health and Family Planning Commission,[20] a government branch that controls all regulations of health care services in China, which has resulted in psychiatric facilities and psychiatry education textbooks across the country still de facto considering homosexuality as a mental disorder and continuing to offer conversion therapy treatments.[1][21][22] Transgender identity is still classified as a disorder despite laws allowing legal gender changes. Also from this story https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/2097292/why-chinas-gays-and-lesbians-are-still-stuck-closet https://www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/2097292/why-... A 2013 Pew Global Attitudes Project survey found that 57 per cent of those polled in China believed that society should not accept homosexuality
- crimsonalucard 7y agoThat pew global survey on china is not too far from the US attitude. Homosexual conversion camps were invented and still exist legally in the US.
- Mikeb85 7y agoChina is one of the safest countries in the world. While they're not as progressive as the west officially, they also are less likely to give a fuck about you being LGBT (ie. they don't care enough to mess with you).
- banabr 7y ago> China is one of the safest countries in the world. Is there actual statistics? The only source I found is from GlobalTimes which is clearly a mouth piece for China. The numbers also seem to be self reported. I trust it less than I trust the GDP numbers from China. Safe is one thing. But what happens if you do get into trouble. Do you trust the authorities there? Last I heard, even the police chief has unknown sources of income. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2019/08/14/chinese-police-chief-sacked-after-his-porsche-driving-wife-explodes-road-rage-incident/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2019/08/14/chinese-poli... So it’s one thing to say it’s safe. But when in trouble, I still trust the system elsewhere.
- crimsonalucard 7y agoIf you ever been to China, in general, you are safer from my anecdotal experience.
- ottolin 7y agoSafe to do what is allowed. Make no mistake, I agree this is how all parts of the world should be doing. This is why we need to have laws. The problem in China is that the laws are not being applied equally to everyone. There is no transparency in the judiciary system and you will never know when or what you will be charged one day.
- crimsonalucard 7y agoIt's not applied equally in the US either. Cops enjoy applying the law unequally to people of color. There's tons of examples in the US. Tons.
