I don't agree. Even the most expensive newspaper (probably the FT) can be bought for $3.00 or so. That's hardly prohibitive.
Until very recently, being illiterate was common, so it's not as if there was a paradise 150 years ago where everyone was an engaged citizen.
- DoreenMichele 7y agoNo, but my understanding is that when the Romans published the code of law publicly somewhere such that anyone capable of reading was capable of knowing their rights without taking the word of their lord and master for it, literacy rates among the lower classes went up dramatically.
