Melbourne's system is great and honestly makes the city just that much more attractive. I know people who live, work and play inside the loop and they basically never leave - wouldn't even think of owning a car. Why would they? That's how it should be. Public transport should simply be considered a public good deliverable free or nearly free by government, like footpaths or parks or Medicare. It should be considered a basic function of society - and if you want to go private, you pay.
