Why do people say things like this? They aren't. There is still a human-in-the-loop for all systems I'm aware of.
The problems with nukes are that (a) the command and control systems can't reliably prevent one or a small number of people from going from going rogue or (b) the 'human' in the loop has to make a quick decision whether to launch based on potentially crappy inputs.
The latter case has happened enough in the past that it should be pretty clear it's a serious problem. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nuclear_close_calls https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nuclear_close_calls for a list.
