Are Navies Dying?
- Arnt 7y agoHow remarkable that the article doesn't go into cost at all. "War is a continuation of politics by other means", wrote Clausewitz. That, if regarded as true, provides an alternative to a navy: The same money spent on other political acts to secure one's country against possible enemies. If the price of "warships, submarines and aircraft carriers" rises, then the alternatives grow better. Germany's an example; it pays its EU partners a little over 30% of its defense budget. It is at least arguable that spending that money on subsidising french farmers and building roads in Italy has been better for German security than a 30% increase in military spending would have been.
