I'm not sure I can find the specific project I'm thinking of now (possibly [1]), but I recall that ~10-15 years ago someone scanned vinyl records with a consumer or "small business" grade scanner well enough that the scan could be played back with enough fidelity to be recognizable. Certainly far short of "all the data", but it's a data point for what can be accomplished with mass-market hardware.
