- ajross 7y agoYeah, but the Boise sprawl neighborhoods detailed in the article are almost certainly 95+% white. It's not like there's no diversity in "the midwest", but the Idaho places being described (and lovingly photographed!) are awfully segregated. Would you or your extended family really be comfortable packing up and moving into an environment where they're literally the only south asians in their neighborhood? If not, then that seems like an important fact to address in an article about large scale population motion. It just creeps me out. The article is nominally about a fairly bland economic point, but the archetype they picked is a bunch of (seriously, really beautiful) photos of white families in de facto segregated neighborhoods!
- drak0n1c 7y agoMy spouse's family was one of the only Chinese American families in their small Wyoming town. Her father moved to there poor and is now a VP at the local employer and heads multiple local organizations. The first time she experienced actual harmful racism was after moving to Seattle. All it takes is a willingness to put yourself out there, attend a local church, etc. The people I’ve ran into there are far friendlier and more genuine than nearly everyone I’ve met in my years of city living.
- selimthegrim 7y agoMy aunt in a small town in rural Florida was visibly brown and Muslim (well, Ahmedi, but that's not important for this post). She described getting relentlessly proselytized at her doorstep, at the A&P, every Sunday, etc. Attending a local church wasn't an option.
- someguydave 7y agoI know several Indians who live in nearly all white suburbs and they get along just fine.
- masonic 7y agoThe most NIMBY people I've ever encountered are Cupertino residents from the subcontinent.
- selimthegrim 7y agoThere’s a world of difference between say Cleveland, OH and Zanesville.
