anec-data here but I'll add it anyway. The "getting ads delivered based on the exact obscure thing you happened to be talking about just half an hour previously" trope was happenening to me with what was becoming laughable predictability and led me to uninstall the app from my phone permanently. It was just the final straw alongside a sudden massive uptick in notification spam [somebody you don't know in a group you're in liked a thread - NOTIFICATION... A friend of a friend of a friend you've never met and only have a tenuous connection with shared a thing... NOTIFICATION] whilst also erstwhile hiding things I was genuinely interesteded in because algorithm led me to change to first the mobile web version and then the "tinfoil" wrapped version and guess what... the strangely co-incidental ads for things related to conversations pretty much stopped overnight.
Anec-data for sure but the co-incidences were uncanny.
- blackflame7000 7y agoThis is exactly my experience. I'm not a paranoid person by any means but it was becoming laughable how much it was happening. The final straw was when my buddy came over to my apt after a work where he was explaining that he had to trim some trees and 30 minutes later I'm getting ads for tree trimmers even though I live in an apt and have never even remotely searched for anything on the topic. It happens too often and to too many people for me to believe they don't. Especially because if I owned facebook I would do the same thing because there's little pushback and the data is invaluable.
