Ask HN: How do you make connections on Twitter?

I admire some amazing people I follow on Twitter. I am thinking of talking to them to learn, to connect. Is it weird to get a DM from one of your followers? Have you guys made connections with someone on twitter (via DMs perhaps?) How do you recommend one should go about it?
