A study of only 8 hours isn't much of a study at all.
- Hamuko 7y agoValve should make longer games.
- knolan 7y agoI’d be happy if they made actual games again.
- grenoire 7y agoExcuse me, Dota Underlords? The absolute timeless classic? /s
- cameronbrown 7y agoMan I really hope HLVR ships. The community have found evidence of 30+ (yep) axed games from Valve over the past decade.
- ocdtrekkie 7y agoMost studies probably use much less than 8 hours of a respondent's time, I believe. The greater issue is the use of only 77 test subjects to begin with.
- Donald 7y agoRead the paper, the authors did a power analysis to arrive at their participant sample size. ( http://myweb.fsu.edu/vshute/pdf/portal1.pdf http://myweb.fsu.edu/vshute/pdf/portal1.pdf ) > We needed at least 34 participants per condition to estimate moderate effect sizes in our analyses, with a power of .90.
- mattkrause 7y agoWhat’s the problem? The study is crazy-well powered (0.90), which is way above the “industry-standard” (and often not achieved) 0.80.
- crimsonalucard 7y agoThis isn't true. 8 hours says something about an 8 hour activity or event. Which can hint at a possible connection to an annual activity or event. Scientists do not have unlimited resources or sample sizes that are unlimited. They make do with what they can and an 8 hour study does produce results worth looking at. No logic says otherwise.
- magashna 7y agoPortal isn't very long
- dymk 7y agoWell, it takes more than 8 hours to beat the game [1] and there's a lot of extra content for the game that you can spend many 10s of hours more on. [1] https://howlongtobeat.com/game.php?id=7231 https://howlongtobeat.com/game.php?id=7231

- atoav 7y agoYou’d be surprised how many studies have subjects well below the 1 ns border..
