I have thought for a long time that the best (and most cost effective) way to improve the quality of your pictures is to reduce camera shake. You could spend $1000 or much more on a new camera with a bunch more megapixels, or you could spend $100 or less on a tripod, or a monopod, and get sharper pictures with the camera you have. This advice works for a DSLR or a smartphone.
