Drive a stick shift in america and you'll very quickly see how many people are zombies behind the wheel. Red light means head down phone time. People run red lights way more often because they either didn't make the green because someone was on their phone at the start of the line and people are too scared to use their horn and risk road rage, or they themselves were head down. The police do not enforce the laws on the books about distracted driving or driving while texting, hell the police don't respond to much any more in our city unless you say active shooter. It's just so frustrating to try to drive any more in the past 10 years because of phones.

- bob1029 7y agoI have an easy solution to this problem. Make it a felony to use your phone (e.g. looking down at it) while in the driver seat of a vehicle in motion. This is the only way you will get people to pay any attention. You only have to enforce something like this occasionally. The fear of harsh consequences will take care of the rest. Drunk driving seems to be far less of an epidemic than distracted phone driving these days...
- jdnenej 7y agoIt seems like insanity that that is not already illegal. It is in Australia and people still do it, most drivers would just rather risk killing someone if it means 5 more minutes on Instagram
- P_I_Staker 7y agoIt's absolutely illegal in the usa, and frequently targeted for enforcement.

- NullPrefix 7y agoIIRC license suspension.
- P_I_Staker 7y agoThat's what we need. More harsh laws and crackdowns, and more permanent members of the loser class. Maniacs with little chance of excelling in life, and nothing to lose. That'll do wonders for all our other societal problems.
- bob1029 7y agoWhat do you propose we do to get people to stop using their phones while driving? Do you disagree with the typical penalties for drunk driving today?
- btrettel 7y agoI've had similar experiences as a cyclist. I've gone through cyclist stop sign enforcement twice (no ticket for me as I follow the law), but I haven't personally seen distracted driving enforcement ever since I moved to Austin about 6 years ago. I've been told here on HN that Austin does enforce the distracted driving laws, but I personally am not seeing it. Distracted driving is something I see on a daily basis. Lately I've been getting better at recognizing distracted driving and getting out of the way. I appreciate that rideshare drivers started having bright visual indicators to show which company they are driving for. Those folks are often extremely distracted. I'll also stay away from delivery drivers as they too are frequently distracted. I recall one FedEx driver who got angry at me for telling him to stop looking at his phone while his vehicle was in motion. He pointed out that it was not a phone, which didn't actually matter... I'd appreciate any other tips on how to handle distracted drivers if you are using the road.
- dasKrokodil 7y agoJust out of interest: why would you notice this more when driving a stick shift?
- post_break 7y agoYou need to pay attention at lights to know when to put your car into gear.
