I believe that we've reached an inflection point on the path to a utopian-esque society and it feels as though we're primed to backslide catastrophically.
For a variety of reasons innumerable, but generally containing in my mind:
Technical literacy being outpaced by technical dependence. The threat of the oligopoly - and the lack of action to dismantle it. The inability of humans to work together as a species and their preference for in-fighting over collaboration and compromise. A breakdown in natural selection, increased coddling, and a general weakening of ability and character relative to other nations. Short-sidedness with regard to most everything from education to the environment.
Existing in a liminal state where great things appear to be possible, but seem unlikely to be obtained is torturous.
