I think synthetic fuel from renewable energy (electricity + water + co2 from the air) is a better way to go. Much less complexity in the plane.

- im3w1l 7y agoA drop in replacement would be very attractive. How much electricity would it take to make a liter of fuel? How much money?
- dredmorbius 7y agoThat's an interesting option. It's been proposed and on the table for nearly 60 years -- M. King Hubbert first made the suggestion in the early 1960s. All the research I'm aware of, up to and including Google's synfuel startup, struggle with cost-effectiveness though. CO2 from seawater may be more energy-efficient than from air, but either way, scaling cost-effectively hasn't happened.
