But no, they won't add them, because God forbid they actually do something useful. It's obviously more important they add five different skin tones... still don't understand what was wrong with generic yellow. Not everything has to be politicized.
- jodrellblank 7y ago> still don't understand what was wrong with generic yellow. What race is Homer Simpson? (Casual normal person answer, not nitpicking, please). If you can answer that, you have all the information you need to understand.
- coldtea 7y ago>What race is Homer Simpson? Indiscriminate. Homer's race is only assumed white not because of his yellow color, but because of his other life circumstances and stereotypes used in the show. The whole global culture is not beholden to Simpsons, so that "what race Homer is -> that means Homer's color denotes that race for everybody". There are comics in black/latino/asian dominant countries where the heroes (if the comics are not realistic, like Marvel) are all kinds of shades, yellow, green, pink, red, brown, white, etc and are still supposed to represent black/latino/asian etc folks. (And nobody ever considered Mickey Mouse black, despite having a black body). >If you can answer that, you have all the information you need to understand. Not really. If anything, the additional shades in the emojis give people more power to discriminate, focus on skin color, and be insensitive...

You mean, one colour generic yellow isn't enough for professional animators? This observation doesn't seem to be supporting the position you're defending.
- big_chungus 7y ago> professional animators Maybe not for professionals, but for Joe Average sending emoticons from his phone as part of a text message, probably. The needs of a professional animator and your average text-messager are different by orders of magnitude. He observed that in a fantasy or abstract situation (i.e. cartoon faces, comics, etc.), color != ethnicity, which is an excellent observation which does support his position. You, on the other hand, tried to claim basic emoticons were insufficient because they would prove insufficient for a professional animator.
- danbolt 7y agoI dunno! Adding symbols to convey skin tones seems more universally useful than special shapes for a customizable terminal prompt. Don’t you think? The former strikes me as something nearly everyone is familiar with, while the latter is something more specifically appealing to technical users. It strikes me as a bit politicized to be prioritizing terminal themes over being able to express skin tone, don’t you think?
