From experience I can tell you that the solution often is very very complex in the beginning. So complex even the researcher doesn't understand it. Publication comes when the solution can be expressed in a way that at least a handful of researchers can understand it. But this is not the end. Going back and looking at it one, three, ten, twenty years later people often find better, easier ways to express it.
