You've been downvoted, but your words deserve a reply. Profit motive does not go away in a "non-profit" (Mozilla Corp is the for-profit subsidiary of Mozilla Foundation; top salary last seen [2017] was $2.3M+). It takes innumeracy or worse to miss that Mozilla depends for its profits (to pay such salaries and bonuses) mainly on the Google search deal.
In my opinion, this conflict of interest between users and Mozilla's search revenue share held back tracking protection in Firefox over the years.
Meanwhile Brave has a transparent rate card, where we pay the user 70% of the gross revenue for user-private ads, and 15% for publisher ads (not yet deployed; the publisher makes 70% and we take same as the user). So we get <= what users get, and will fail if our users don't like the private/anonymous ad model enough to opt in at sufficient scale that we can cover our costs.
Good luck pressuring Mozilla to cut its top exec's pay from seven figures. Your words are empty.
- onyva 7y agoAnd you, sir, you were fired from Mozilla because of community pressure. I appreciate Mozilla even though I didn’t always use Firefox because of what it represents, and rejecting a CEO who’s homophobic and racist is showing the power of that community.
- BrendanEich 7y agoMozilla says I was not fired: https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2014/04/05/faq-on-ceo-resignation/ https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2014/04/05/faq-on-ceo-resignat.... Are they lying? On “racist”, you are wrong. But you seem to have trouble with the truth, so I will stop here.
- onyva 7y agoSo you admit you’re a homophobe but god forbid not a racist. Great. Appreciate the honesty. There’s a refresher. https://www.leafandcore.com/2016/09/03/brave-is-a-browser-that-could-save-the-web-but-its-from-an-awful-person/ https://www.leafandcore.com/2016/09/03/brave-is-a-browser-th... The technicalities of you being fired or left no choice is hardly the point. We’re at a point in time that we need less bigotry and racism, not accidentally financing more of it.
- BrendanEich 7y agoI admit nothing except you are a terrible arguer and not great at virtue signaling. See here on another HN page where you tried the same garbage and I rejected your definition: https://news.ycombinator.com/threads?id=BrendanEich&next=20831604 https://news.ycombinator.com/threads?id=BrendanEich&next=208... If we do not agree on the definition of words, there is no point talking. Your calling Mozilla liars does neither you nor them any favors. It is in fact illegal under California Labor Law 1101 et seq. to fire anyone over political acts. I was not fired in 2014. I was not fired in 2012 when the L.A. Times publicized the names in California’s Political Reform Act database of donors who gave $100 or more. Does that make Mozilla soft on “bigotry”? No. At this point your “racist” slur seems retracted without an apology just as device to repeat “homophobe”, but it looks like you admit you were wrong to label me. That you take your misconduct here so unseriously disqualifies you from polite HN society in my view, and I hope mods and others agree. I frankly don’t want to be citizen in any utopia you might confect, so I am going to ignore you now. Try to do better, instead of discrediting your own cause.
- onyva 7y ago“Polite” conversation about homophobia and race? Tell that to the people who are victims of bigotry. Also, I didn’t retract anything. I’m pointing out the obvious fault in your excuses. I repeat, supporting people like you (with views we’ve only accidentally became aware of) is funding bigotry. And BTW repeatedly attacking Mozilla and accusing it (of all organizations) of “crimes” against users, is pathetic and too obvious, as well as all the aggressive promotion of Brave, which was noted before by many here. Polite company indeed. And if you don’t mind, I’m not going too get too offended by you ignoring me. You didn’t earn the respect for your disregard to have any weight.
