When someone writes a buggy C library and someone deploys that library in some set of devices, which are compromised and used as part of a botnet that DDoSes my site, I'm hurt through no choice that I made.
When I buy something from a shop and their database gets hacked via some bug and my data is extracted, I'm hurt even though I had minimal control over the situation.
Vulnerable software is a negative externality, like air pollution.
- dmitrygr 7y agoYou are free to not buy any product or use any service that uses code not written in the language of your choice.
- pjmlp 7y agoGreat, does the programming language now comes listed on the box, just besides the EULA?
- perl4ever 7y ago1. You're directly replying to someone who pointed out that not choosing a product with vulnerable code doesn't protect you. 2. When it comes to your own choices, information about what language is used by every facet of a product/service isn't usually available. 3. Even when information is available, most people don't and won't choose stuff based on language anyway, which means if you do care, you can't expect a viable alternative to be produced by the market. So the standard libertarian advice is inapplicable in a triply redundant manner.
