I'd hope it's a simple misunderstanding, but my gut tells me that this was planned -- I don't see how the VideoLAN guys can suddenly forget that one of their own demanded removal of the application and then vehemently say "we had nothing to do with it!" This stuff is all public...it makes no sense, honestly.
