As a thought experiment - by delaying the adoption of nuclear power, the creators of recent HBO series are probably going to be implicitly responsible for more deaths and habitat destruction than CHNPP explosion was.
EDIT: their work isn’t simply journalism. They intentionally dramatized and lied about things - radiation being contagious, radiation bringing down helicopter, etc.

That's not a thought experiment, that's just an unsupported claim. Further, it's not like there was a rush to adopt nuclear power that was abandoned as a result of public response to the Chernobyl miniseries. Even further, it is not even the case that the miniseries implicated nuclear power in the accident, which it went out of its way to lay at the foot of corner-cutting by the Soviet bureaucracy causing an accident for which all the knowledge needed to prevent it absolutely existed within the system, it was just (in the narrative of the miniseries) not acted on and actively walled off from the people actually involved.
- autokad 7y agoI disagree with his hypothesis but: "A thought experiment considers a hypothesis, theory, or principle for the purpose of thinking through its consequences."
- option 7y agocare to elaborate why you disagree? Suppose that show delayed/reduced nuclear usage by 1%. Than that capacity is filled by coal or oil (sun and wind can’t fill for nuclear - nuclear should fill for them when they arent available). The coal and oil is responsible for a lot of deaths due to the pollution, multiply that by 1% and you’ll get a lot of deaths
- dmix 7y agoSome of the most destructive policies are sold with the best intentions. We need to be more conscious in society of the benefit of lesser evils when there are no true alternatives, leaving us far worse off in the long run. Idealism and wishing for unrealistic perfection can do as much harm as outright evils like authoritarianism. I suspect the internet and mass media pushes us further in that direction when everyone has an opinion, which gets formed by 5 minute sound bites on comedy/entertainment news shows, scare tactic viral campaigns on Facebook, and non-academic documentaries which can spin statistics, short interviews, and shocking clips into any narrative like they.
- whycombagator 7y ago> their work isn’t simply journalism I wasn't aware it was supposed to be. > They intentionally dramatized Literally every show/movie ever made "based on a true story" does this. The show is a historical drama, of course it's going to be dramatized.
- option 7y agohow would you feel about a documentary dramatizing facts about sv40 virus and vaccines?
- whycombagator 7y agoHBO's Chernobyl wasn't a documentary. That being said, if HBO/Sky want to do a drama on SV40 - I'd probably watch it and enjoy it.
