Bingo. I think this is a virtuous cycle.
Even if only a small percentage of people are vegans, you only need one vegan in a group of people to pick a place that offers vegan food. Vegan food is also a safe bet for the larger group of vegetarians. That means more places want to offer some good vegan options, which in turn makes more people try vegan food, and makes it easier to be a vegan.
I’m not a vegan nor a vegetarian, but I often find myself ordering vegan dishes because they seem more healthy for myself and the environment. There are so many types of food these days where vegan is not a compromise.
- coldtea 7y ago>Even if only a small percentage of people are vegans, you only need one vegan in a group of people to pick a place that offers vegan food. Or you can just ostracize them. Saves lots of emotional turmoil in the long run, as the vegan friend telling everybody about their dietary choices quickly takes its toll on adults...
- ptah 7y agothe toll of eating meat on environment is far greater than your concerns over your feelings. choose the lesser evil
- coldtea 7y agoEating meat is better for the environment in the long run. If human population drops to zero due to climate change (which meat consumption contributes to), then the environment will be left alone and do great on its own! It wont even take more than 1-2 millennia for recovery, which is nothing in geological terms! Compared to that eating vegan is just a feel-good half-measure.
- ptah 7y agoI have only seen evidence to the contrary. can you provide anything to back up what you are saying
- NeedMoreTea 7y agoHmm. Meat eating is better for the environment because it'll see off humanity faster? Presumably along with driving the least economical car you can find, etc? I see the point. I don't think it's the answer most of us prefer though.
- okmokmz 7y agoYour argument is that meat is better for the environment because it will cause humans to go extinct due to global warming so the planet can recover? That's absurd
- povertyworld 7y agoHave vegans given up their cars yet? Veganism is a nice gesture, but really vegans need to step it up and ditch the cars if they care about the Earth.
- akiselev 7y agoAdults generally dont suffer emotional turmoil when someone else talks about their food.
- coldtea 7y agoIf others do it on every opportunity, with a smug holier than thou attitude and needless detail, they do... In fact studies have shown it can drive a person insane...
- saagarjha 7y agoIf you frequently go to places to eat, I think it’s entirely reasonable for a vegan friend to tell you what their dietary preferences are. Other than that, it looks like your problem is with a specific person.
- Legogris 7y agoOr just go to a place offering vegan alternatives and there will be no fuss?
- wUabkSG6L5Bfa5 7y agoNassim Taleb makes precisely this argument about the power of stubborn minorities. Which I think is 99% great. Though I think the medium term equilibrium is just that more establishments will need to do better than a half-ass salad for a vegan offering. Which is 100% great.
- glitchc 7y agoStubborn minorities also lead to the "Tyranny of the Minority" and cause widespread anger among the silent majority of moderates who do not foist their preferences onto others. It leads to reduced freedoms all across society. https://areomagazine.com/2019/04/02/the-tyranny-of-the-minority-and-how-to-prevent-it/ https://areomagazine.com/2019/04/02/the-tyranny-of-the-minor... - freeone3000 7y agoDude, it's restaurants offering better vegetarian options than the Sad Salad. It ain't that big a deal.

- dfxm12 7y agoVegan food is also a safe bet for the larger group of vegetarians. And people with kosher or halal diets, too.
