Iowa City eliminated cars on roads in their downtown, and they have a vibrant town square there now with plenty of restaurants, bars, shopping, ice cream, etc.

Boston closes down Newbury Street a few times during the summer for the past few years.

But I'm talking more about taking a random street that passes through the entire town and removing cars permanently. Maybe a side street parallel to the existing major car thoroughfare. At the extreme end, say, turning an entire North/South avenue of Manhattan bike/pedestrian-only.
