One byte used to cost a dollar
- rasz 7y agoHow about early internet cost? Poland was the first Central European Soviet block country connected to the internet. In 1990 a link was established between Warsaw University and BITNET/EARN (European Academic Research Network) node in Denmark Lyngby using newly laid Baltic fiber-optic cable. PLEARN <-> DKEARN, whooping 9600 bps IBM RSCS based mail/newsgroup exchange. Finally two years later in 1992 it got upgraded with several additional 64 kbps TCP/IP links (Stockholm, Vienna, BGP!), and at the same time very first ISP, POLPAK, started offering commercial access. Cost: $15/month + $.3/minute + $5/megabyte.
