- oehtXRwMkIs 7y agoHave you tried? There are some really nice DEs out there. KDE has been killing it lately, and there are so many good tiling WMs too. It all depends on what you're looking for from a desktop OS though, so without elaboration I don't know if you're missing out or there's that one thing that's lacking in the Linux desktop world right now.
- Barrin92 7y agomy two reasons why I prefer linux is 1. tiling wms, same as in the article. I've gotten a huge productivity boost and largely solved my hand pain by moving to a keyboard workflow and 2, I don't really see the upside of using a mac these days. they're more expensive, more constrained in terms of software (I like to dual boot windows andl inux), I have an android phone which integrates well with linux, so linux it is. the only actual benefit macs used to have was that it was a polished, non-windows system, but pretty much any mainstream linux distro these days works fine even out of the box.
- shmerl 7y agoAnecdotal experience. I tried to set up gcc for someone on macOS, and it ended up requiring to register an iTunes account that asked for a credit card info. After that I said "just simply use Linux, installing gcc there is one simple command". TL;DR: the reason to use Linux is that it's not controlled by Apple ;)
- philwelch 7y agoThe Mac shell environment is substandard the longer you press it. Standard utilities are often not the GNU variants so they are often slower and lack the features you may be used to. Homebrew is a second-rate package manager. Worst of all, actually becoming a power user entails learning macOS specific, non-transferable skills that would have been more generally applicable if you learned them in a Linux environment. Also, the default file system setup is case-insensitive, which makes some Git repos nigh-impossible to work with.
